The decision to close again on Black Friday comes as the coronavirus pandemic has forced many retailers, including REI, to reimagine how they served customers and communities.
When did REI start closing on Black Friday?

The outdoor-gear retailer first closed down all of its stores on Black Friday in 2015, launching the company’s #OptOutside campaign.

Why is Black Friday still a thing?
In the 1950s, Philadelphia police used the “Black Friday” term to refer to the day between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy game. Huge crowds of shoppers and tourists went to the city that Friday, and cops had to work long hours to cover the crowds and traffic.
When did opt outside start?
#OptOutside first launched in 2015. No other large retailer had been shut on Thanksgiving and Black Friday before. The response was incredible: more than 1.4 million people and 170 outdoor companies, nonprofits and organizations chose to spend their Black Friday outdoors.

You need to be an REI member to shop at the garage sale and no membership is required to shop the outlet. The outlet doesn’t have damaged or used items for sale, only new items that are marked down or are on sale.
