What to consider when looking at a dual battery system?
Batteries also come in various sizes and weights. The number of internal lead plates can vary in number (i.e. 7, 9, 13, 15, 17 & 19) and thickness. So, the amp hour capacity also varies between each of them. Battery terminals can also range from standard, standard/wingnut to dual fit.
Can a new battery be installed with an old battery?
Never install a new battery with an old battery. It is best to buy two new batteries and install them both at the same time. Otherwise, the old battery will form a “current loop” with the new battery, drawing its fluid for itself.
Can you install two new batteries at the same time?
It is best to buy two new batteries and install them both at the same time. Otherwise, the old battery will form a “current loop” with the new battery, drawing its charge for itself. If this happens, you would have just wasted a perfectly good new battery. The new batteries should also be of the same capacity, brand, and age.
Why are dual battery setups so popular for overlanders?
Then, there’s the fact that, for many overlanders, added battery power is needed in the first place—whether it’s for truck winches and campsite lighting, or for mini-fridges and media systems. It’s that double advantage— providing a backup for the primary battery and powering accessories—that makes dual-battery setups so popular.

How big of a box do you need for 2 batteries?
The batteries can go into a box. I recommend box # TLA7708R which is designed for batteries. It is 26-3/4 inches long, 8-3/16 inches wide, and 13 inches tall so 2 batteries that combine for less than those dimensions would fit. You could also add a solar panel to the top, # TLA7713, to charge the batteries.
