  1. While an underweight portfolio can be identified through simple mathematics by determining what percentage of a portfolio is directed towards a particular asset, an underweight stock is identified on more flexible terms based on the variables chosen by the analyst who is making the determination.

Situation where the share of a portfolios investments in a particular financial market (expressed as a percentage of the portfolios total investments in all financial markets) is proportionately lower than that financial markets share of total capitalization (expressed as a percentage of the capitalization of all financial markets). Opposite of overweight.

  3. Underweight refers to one of two situations in regard to trading and finance.
