Three-schema Architecture
A data access control framework that includes three levels or schemas: an external or programming view, a conceptual or data management view, and an internal or database management view. Such ideas were developed in 1971 by the US National Standards Institute/Scalable Processor Architecture Subcommittee, but have not been implemented in practice by database management systems (DBMS) vendors. The principle is that a conceptual schema consists of business rules derived from a semantic data model that ensures independence between programs and data structures. Meanwhile, the focus has shifted to computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools and repository standards.
