It depends on the screen resolution. The default resolution is 1280x800 pixels, so you can find the same size image for your background image.

The aspect ratio is 1.6: 1. This means that the image should be 1.6 times wider than it is long. Example: 1280 x 800 pixels, 1680 x 1050 pixels, 1920 x 1200 pixels.
The system setting desktop and screen saver area fits the image on the screen. If you use an image smaller than 1280 x 800 pixels, the image will be enlarged to display. I have a Mac Tower and a MacBook. The aspect ratio of the monitor mounted on the tower is 1.6, so I used the same desktop image for both computers. Some images are 1680 x 1050, others 1920 x 1200. The desktop images that Apple installs on your computer are 2560 x 1600. That's why they look so sharp.
